Puppy mills in Oklahoma
A/w local OKC Monday news:
The Humane Society of the US is calling Okla. the No.2 puppy mill state in the union
and has issued a report that rips the nation's largest puppy-selling pet store chain and
the breeders who supply it.
In a news release, the HSUS said "Many Petland stores across the country are
supporting cruel puppy mills, even while telling unsuspecting customers that the dogs
come only from good breeders.
"
Petland has responded on their website, disputing the report and they accuse the
HSUS of "sensationalism at its best."
None of Petland's 140 US stores are in Okla. However, there 24 Okla. breeders who
sell dogs to the corporation a/w Ms. Cynthia Armstrong, Okla. state director for the
Humane Society.
In its website response, Petland officials states that the Humane Society "has a history
of publicizing false information in an effort to gain money.
"
"Reports such as those posted on the HSUS website surface every year around the
holiday season in conjunction with their annual fund raising efforts," Petland officials claim.
"They do not operate a single pet shelter or pet adoption facility anywhere in the US.
To the contrary, over the last 10 years, Petland has adopted out more than 270,000
homeless puppies and kittens nationwide."
Okla. has more than 530 USDA-licensed dog breeders.
Ms. Armstrong said only Missouri has more puppy mills that Okla. and Kansas ranks
third.
"There are inherent problems in trying to take care of up to 600 to 700 dogs in a single
location. It is just impossible to provide the kind of care and socialization these animals
need," Ms. Armstrong added.
Ms. Armstrong also urged people who want to adopt pets to visit their local animal
shelter or animal rescue groups and for the individuals who insist on buying from breeders,
there is no substitute for meeting the breeders and looking at their operations.
